the roll-up

cannabis and counterculture in perfect harmony.

The Roll-Up is a YouTube series that captures an engaged audience interested in inspiration, music, and cannabis culture. Our goal is to provide a casual and humorous exploration of legal cannabis as an artistic muse, to capture personal anecdotes from beloved musical personalities, and to record performances emerging from the in-studio experience. These conversations will be moderated by Christian Detres, a long-time lifestyle journalist (VICE, BUST, Bushwick Daily, RVA magazine) and influencer in the music and film industries, and hosted at the legendary Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, VA.

Each week, The Rollup invites three to four musicians to gather at Sound of Music to sample a curated strain of cannabis introduced by the grower, discuss its merits, and rate its effects. Once influenced by its charms, these musicians will engage in banter with the moderator, highlighting their careers, anecdotes, and styles as they relate to the unique group and the free-flowing conversation. They will then create an impromptu performance - a jam session - which will be recorded, mixed, and mastered by Music Producer John Morand for release on video and in audio formats.

MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Current off-stage music platforms like Tiny Desk, KEXP, Audiotree, and Mahogany Sessions often maintain a strict divide between the performer and the listener. The Rollup aims to dismantle this "fourth wall," presenting artists as authentic individuals and mutual fans rather than distant icons. By fostering a sense of collegial intimacy, the series highlights the unscripted virtuosity and versatility of renowned musicians, similar to the "on-the-spot" creative challenges seen on Drumeo.

While existing series typically feature pre-rehearsed catalog material, The Rollup introduces a new dimension: the creation of original music in-studio without a set mandate. This approach elevates the genre by delivering a level of immediacy, spontaneity, and genuine camaraderie that is currently missing from market-leading content.

Our competitive advantage:

  • Production Quality: We prioritize cinema-grade production values, drawing inspiration from VICE TV and the best of gonzo journalism within the music and counterculture sectors.

  • Unique Voice: Hosting duties fall to Christian Detres, whose background in lifestyle journalism, talent management, and music production creates an atmosphere of hospitable confidence.

Value Proposition: We are dedicated to providing our audience with a bi-weekly, comfort-focused conversational experience paired with one-of-a-kind musical performances.

Format and structure

Season 1 will consist of 6 feature episodes (22 minutes each) for release on our dedicated YouTube channel, broken into clips and featured moments for social media optimization across all relevant platforms - TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, as well as all promising new apps like BlueSky and Threads.

AN EPISODE’S TYPICAL ANATOMY

ACT 1: We introduce the musicians in montage under voiceover as they travel to and enter the studio. Clips of their music play throughout. Freezeframes (think Guy Ritchie films) with a rotoscoped overlay give room for bulleted “stats”. They meet each other and the host of the show, who guides them to the upstairs ‘smokers lounge’. Conversation ensues as they relax and share their expectations and relevant anecdotes.

ACT 2: Enter the Weed Wizard, Joshua Rickey, cannabis scientist and friendly educator. He will distribute joints (or pass a bong, a pipe…). We get moments of each musician enjoying the selection as Joshua relays the information about the strain - growing conditions, appearance, aroma, curing, etc. We focus on the atitude changes in the artists as they describe their experience with the flower (or edible). A brief group interview of sorts ensues as the host discusses musical tastes, influences, expectations, and expressions of mutual admiration the guests may have for each other.

ACT 3: There’s a significant tonal shift as we enter the performance segment of the show. Using the tuning and ‘settling in’ audio of the session, we watch the musicians get into position and begin to synergize with their new bandmates. We nominate one of them to start it off by picking the mood and genre of what’s to come. While editing to a workable cut that emphasizes the best of what is captured in this session, we aim to focus on the journey to a killer beat, or riff, a melody that translates to all the musicians they can get carried away with. It is about the coming together of talented minds as well as the final product.

OUTRO: Credits roll over unscripted reactions from the artists as they conclude the session. We aim to capture genuine joy as they say goodbye to each other, listen to playback in the booth, and go about their business out the door they came in from. We want to convey the mood of satisfaction in creating something new and unexpected with like-minded new friends.
